Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) Certificate

The TEYL Certificate is designed for teachers who want to have a specialty in teaching English to children. The TEYL Certificate course aims at providing both recently graduated ESOL teachers and practicing General English teachers with the necessary skills, confidence and ability to be able to teach Young Learners effectively; supplementing your existing knowledge about teaching. Over the week, you will gain a basic foundation from which to start a career in teaching English to children. The course is suitable for native and non-native speakers of English.

The course introduces a specific method of lesson planning used for young learners. We will look at the characteristics of young learners, classroom management, and multiple intelligences and how they relate to teaching children, as well as experiencing and examining lessons for different age groups ranging from under 5s to 7 year-olds. Optional information is also available for teaching older students. You will also experience a range of different activities you can use in your lessons. You will complete a project, writing a plan for a week-long unit and specific lesson plans for an age group of your choice.

This course is designed as an add-on to any TESOL certificate course, but can also be taken as a stand-alone course.

Fees and dates for the course are here.

Schedule
1 week. Total 30 hours. 9:30am – 4:30pm, Monday – Friday

Due to the demanding nature of the course, potential students are required to have a TESOL Certificate and demonstrate at least a high intermediate level of English in a phone interview with the Head of Teacher Training before they are accepted.

A highly recommended option is to combine your basic TESOL course with supplemental specialty courses to take the Total TESOL Package.

Opportunity to Interact with American School Children
Rennert is very happy to offer, through a partner program Global Classroom, a wonderful opportunity for aspiring or existing non-native speaking teachers to visit school(s) here in New York. You will meet American school children and deliver one, or a series of, cultural workshop(s) to them. This is a rare chance to share your culture with American kids while learning more about them and about education here in the U.S. This is a fun and rewarding add-on to your TESOL course; and is completely free. It can be done before or after the TESOL course.
