Entrance Requirements
You must have a high school degree and show a capacity for tertiary education including a good understanding of the English language and good writing skills. All potential course participants are required to have an oral interview (which can be done by phone) and write an essay to ensure their language skills are adequate to take the course and to teach English. Though a high school diploma is the minimum requirement, you will need to demonstrate an ability to complete college-level course work and the maturity to participate in an intensive academic and practical training program.
For the TESOL Certificate course, participants need to have a language level high enough to credibly teach an Advanced level class. Non-native speakers should have the equivalent of the below test scores:
- 650 (paper-based TOEFL)
- 280 (computer-based TOEFL)
- 1115 (IBT TOEFL)
- 900 (TOEIC)
- Band 7 on IELTS
- C2 on the Common European Framework
- CPE
For the SIT Best Practices in TESOL Certificate and Rennert TESOL Certificate courses, the language proficiency requirements are:
- 550 (paper-based TOEFL)
- 220 (computer-based TOEFL)
- 85 (IBT TOEFL)
- 650 (TOEIC)
- Band 6 on IELTS
- B2 on the Common European Framework
- FCE
Please note that that these scores are a guide only. If you have not done any of these tests, we can assess your English language level in the application process.
As with any program, we can only accept participants we believe will be successful in the course. For the WL-SIT TESOL Certificate course, we seek candidates we believe will also be successful as teachers of English to speakers of other languages. In addition to the education requirement, we seek candidates who show an interest in and a commitment to teaching ESL or EFL and have a positive attitude toward experiential learning and working in groups. These requirements will be assessed by the program administrator through the application and telephone interview.
