Meet Our NY Teachers

Laurence Campbell

Like his own life, Laurence's classes are creative and global in perspective.

He studied Math and Science at Itchen College in Southampton, England. From there, Laurence returned to America to continue his education at Sewanee, The University of the South where he was awarded an academic scholarship to study English Literature. After Sewanee, he pursued graduate work in Fine Arts at ISU with a concentration on Print and Papermaking. During that time, Laurence worked under many recognized artist across several disciplines, including sculptor Leroy Lamas. Later, he wrote and illustrated "Be Still", a story about the need to adapt to survive and the tenacious spirit of life.

Upon completing his Masters Degree, Laurence was selected as an Artist in Residence for the Indiana Arts Commission during which he discovered art and language to be perfect complements. This experience led Laurence to open the Broad Street School, which developed arts and language education for at-risk children.

Later, as a Peace Corp Volunteer in West Africa, he collaborated with local villagers to improve their lives through sustainable resources. In Ghana, his spring box well project provided 1,000 people with clean drinking water. In Togo, he developed fish farms to augment the protein supply of the surrounding area. As a teacher in Nigeria, he documented the historical process of Benin Bronze Casting through a platform funded by the World Bank and USAID. Laurence has also lived and worked in Europe and Asia, teaching English in Austria, Hong Kong and Tianjin, China, and was a delegate to the United Nations in Vienna representing Sevas, a travel and cultural exchange organization.

Laurence holds his Cambridge CELTA from St. Giles, San Francisco. Over the course of his career, he has found that everyone has a story that hits a nerve of common compassion, transcends cultural barriers and unites us as a family. In his classes he encourages self expression and cultural awareness through conversations, readings, presentations, and stories.
